Root Canal Treatment: 5 Myths Debunked

Modern dental treatment at Dentapex

If there's one dental procedure that strikes fear into patients, it's root canal treatment (RCT). But much of that fear is based on outdated information and old stories. Modern root canal treatment is a routine procedure and in most cases, it relieves the severe pain patients were already experiencing before they sat in the chair.

Let's look at the five most common myths and what the evidence actually shows.

❌ Myth 1: Root Canal Treatment Is Extremely Painful

✅ The Fact:

Modern RCT is performed under local anaesthesia. The procedure itself should be no more uncomfortable than having a filling. Studies consistently show that patients who have had root canal treatment rate it as no more painful than other routine dental procedures. The pain patients associate with RCT is actually the pain from the infection that makes RCT necessary not the treatment itself. After a successful RCT, that pain goes away.

❌ Myth 2: It's Better to Just Pull the Tooth

✅ The Fact:

Nothing functions as well as your natural tooth. Extraction may seem like a simpler solution, but it creates new problems: the gap allows adjacent teeth to shift, affects your bite, and may require an implant or bridge to restore proper function procedures that are typically far more involved and expensive than RCT. Keeping your natural tooth through root canal treatment is almost always the better long-term choice.

❌ Myth 3: Root Canal Treatment Causes Illness

✅ The Fact:

This myth dates from poorly designed research in the early 20th century that has since been thoroughly debunked. There is no credible scientific evidence linking properly performed root canal treatment to systemic illness. Major dental and medical associations worldwide, including the World Health Organization, confirm that RCT is safe. The real risk is leaving an infected tooth untreated dental infections can spread to the jaw, neck, and beyond.

❌ Myth 4: RCT-Treated Teeth Need to Come Out Eventually Anyway

✅ The Fact:

A properly treated and restored tooth can last a lifetime. The key word is "restored" most teeth that have had RCT need a crown afterwards to protect them from fracture. With the crown in place and good oral hygiene, there's no reason a root-canal-treated tooth cannot remain in service indefinitely. Many patients retain their treated teeth for 20–30 years or more.

❌ Myth 5: If the Tooth Doesn't Hurt, It Doesn't Need RCT

✅ The Fact:

A dead tooth has no nerve sensation meaning an infected tooth can sometimes be completely painless. This is actually more dangerous, because the infection can progress silently, spreading to the jawbone and surrounding teeth before the patient is aware of any problem. X-rays and clinical examination can detect these "silent" infections. This is one reason regular dental check-ups are so important.

What to Expect During RCT at Dentapex

At Dentapex, we make every effort to ensure RCT is as comfortable as possible:

  1. Thorough anaesthesia we ensure the area is completely numb before beginning. If you feel anything, we stop and administer more anaesthetic.
  2. Rubber dam isolation a small rubber sheet keeps the treatment area clean and dry, improving both comfort and safety.
  3. Rotary instrumentation modern instruments make the process faster and more precise than old-fashioned manual filing.
  4. Clear communication we explain every step before it happens and check in with you throughout.
  5. Post-treatment care we provide detailed aftercare instructions and are available for any questions during recovery.

The Bottom Line

Root canal treatment has come a long way. The procedure you've heard horror stories about is largely a thing of the past. Today, RCT is comfortable, predictable, and most importantly tooth-saving. If you've been told you need root canal treatment, there's no need to delay or be afraid. The sooner it's done, the sooner you'll be pain-free.
